In May 2026, FareShare Cymru visited Jesus Cares in Newport to learn more about the charity’s inspiring journey and the impact it is making across South Wales.
Jesus Cares began in a small room, helping families who could not afford Christmas presents. Today, the organisation distributes around 2,500 food hampers every month. Its growth reflects increasing community need and the determination of volunteers to provide practical support throughout the year.
From Seasonal Support to Year-Round Impact
Jesus Cares was established to help families facing hardship during the festive season. However, volunteers quickly recognised that many people needed support long after Christmas had passed.
As a result, the project expanded beyond seasonal gift giving. It now provides food and other essential items throughout the year. Today, Jesus Cares supports individuals and families across South Wales through a wide network of community organisations, charities, and support services.
Meeting Growing Demand
The scale of the operation today is a testament to how far the project has come. The warehouse is a hive of activity, with volunteers receiving deliveries, organising stock, and preparing hampers for distribution.

Around 2,500 food hampers leave the warehouse each month, helping people access essential food and household items during difficult times. Strong partnerships and community support help Jesus Cares reach thousands of people across the region.
The Role of FareShare Cymru
FareShare Cymru supplies ambient surplus food that helps stock many of the hampers distributed by Jesus Cares.
These products provide valuable cupboard staples. They also ensure good-quality food reaches people who can use it.By redistributing surplus food, FareShare Cymru helps organisations like Jesus Cares maximise their resources, reduce food waste, and support more people in their communities.
Looking Ahead
The story of Jesus Cares demonstrates how a simple idea can grow into something far-reaching. The organisation has adapted to meet changing needs. What started with Christmas presents now helps thousands of people every month. Throughout that growth, Jesus Cares has remained focused on supporting people through hardship.
FareShare Cymru is proud to support that work, helping ensure surplus food reaches communities where it can make the greatest difference.
Jesus Cares shows the impact that can be achieved when communities come together around a shared purpose. Through the dedication of volunteers, the support of local partners, and the redistribution of surplus food, thousands of people across South Wales receive practical help every month.
